Welshpool Mid Wales Airport is host to a revolutionary new helimed service, as critical care practitioners join the air ambulance crew.
Since the beginning of May, NHS consultants have joined the Wales Air Ambulance service at Welshpool, one of only two air ambulance services to offer such a service. This allows the helicopters to carry vital blood and even plasma, something that until now only the military have done. The doctors have advanced expertise in emergency medicine, paediatrics and intensive care.
As many of the air ambulances call outs are to traffic accidents and with new helicopters that can reach any part of Wales within 20 minutes, this enhanced medical service is predicted to save many lives. The air ambulance is also used to stabilise and transfer time-critical patient from district general hospitals to specialist centres around the country.
The new consultant servive is provided by EMRTS Cymru which is funded by the Welsh Assembly. The helicopters and Wales Air Ambulance are totally funded by public donations.
