From Hairdresser to Paramedic ...

Karen & Bolkow 105, at Mid Wales Airport

Karen's Story

Karen Davies has wanted to be a paramedic for as long as she can remember, and is now only one of two female paramedics operating within the Wales Air Ambulance.

Karen began work in Rhayader at the age of 17 as a hairdresser, before settling down to marriage and children. (Shane 19, Adam 16, and Nathan 15).

She said "I wanted to train for the Ambulance Service when I left school, but it was very much a male oriented career back then, so I trained as a hairdresser instead."

However, the desire to help people never left Karen, and as soon as her children were old enough, she applied to be a Care Worker in the community; at the same time, she joined St Johns Ambulance Service. This work increased Karen's passion even further

She applied for a 12 week residential course to qualify as an Ambulance Technician at Llandrindod, and was successful.

Within two years, she qualified as a paramedic, and joined Wales Air Ambulance in 2006, after responding to an advertisement for a three month trial in Welshpool, Mid Wales.

She says; "I still pinch myself to think that I'm working for Wales Air Ambulance."

"I love it!"
